Within this story of a mother's college goodbye, lies a description of my new favorite term for what should be an important goal of parenting: "compassionate detachment. Not detachment from our children but from the outcome of who they are becoming." What could be more key in raising independent adults who are secure in their choices, because they are fully their own.
