In recent years, I noticed a new trend in my clinical practice. During pap smears and pelvic exams, older teens and young women increasingly started to ask me about the appearance of their labia-- whether they appeared normal. I absolutely agree with Rachel Simmons that porn exposure is a driving force. We clearly need to talk to our girls about this, but PLEASE don’t leave boys out of the conversation! What they see online in porn is NOT real. It’s not what real sex is about and it’s not what real bodies look like. Ugh!
