So glad to see the topic of eating disorders in athletes being discussed. I see, all around me, a cultural emphasis on fitness and wellness that is actually disordered eating in disguise (and occasionally an outright eating disorder). If you have an athletic daughter, especially in a sport that favors lean body types, please pay attention. Is she very careful about what and when she eats? Don't assume she's just being "healthy". Is she menstruating regularly? Don't assume she is-- ask her how often she's getting her period. If you have sons, don't assume that you don't have to worry about eating disorders just because you have boys. They, too, can fall into this category, and are also subject to damaging stereotypes regarding male body image from the media. If you suspect that something is amiss, don't hesitate to get help. Your family physician or pediatrician is a great place to start. Of course, I'm always available to discuss this topic as well.
