Talking With Teenagers About Marijuana

Have you started this conversation with your kids yet? The discussion is getting trickier with the legalization of marijuana in some states and the variety of preparations/potencies now available. In this piece, Lisa Damour, Ph.D. skillfully helps parents think about how best to approach this subject with their teens. "When discussing drugs, drinking, driving and other risky business, we can note that no authority – neither parents nor the government – can be trusted to supervise teenagers all of the time. Adolescence centers on the wish for independence. And independence centers on the willingness to look after oneself."

Why More Teen Girls Are Getting Genital Plastic Surgery

In recent years, I noticed a new trend in my clinical practice. During pap smears and pelvic exams, older teens and young women increasingly started to ask me about the appearance of their labia-- whether they appeared normal. I absolutely agree with Rachel Simmons that porn exposure is a driving force. We clearly need to talk to our girls about this, but PLEASE don’t leave boys out of the conversation! What they see online in porn is NOT real. It’s not what real sex is about and it’s not what real bodies look like. Ugh!

A Doctor's Perspective On Early Sports Specialization

Kids should play multiple sports for as long as possible. Early specialization leads to injuries and burn-out. Watch this brief video featuring an orthopedic surgeon that served as a team physician for Stanford, the 49ers, and as a consultant for the SF Giants.

Breast and Body Changes Are Driving Teen Girls Out of Sports

Wow, a little conversation can go a long way. Here is a review of an interesting study recently published in The Journal of Adolescent Health that looked at deterrents to physical activity in adolescent girls. "In a survey of 2,089 English schoolgirls ages 11 to 18, nearly three-quarters listed at least one breast-related concern regarding exercise and sports... Almost 90 percent of the girls in the study said they wanted to know more about breasts in general, and nearly half wanted to know about sports bras and breasts specifically with respect to physical activity." I think we can do that! Adding more information to my seminars, stat!
